Books, with a side of Life

A Year in Books with Heywood Hill

Every year for Christmas, my husband and I exchange one “Big Gift” with one another. Something that we don’t need but want. Something that we try and put a lot of thought and effort into when selecting for one another. This past Christmas my husband legit knocked it out of the park with a gift subscription for a Year in Books from Heywood Hill Bookshop.

Y’all. I DIED when I opened it.

So what exactly IS A Year in Books?

From their website:

Subscribe yourself or a friend to receive a paperback book each month for one year. Subscribers are invited to have a reading consultation with their personal Heywood Hill bookseller or they can receive our choice of the best new books. Every month we will deliver their beautifully wrapped book to their door accompanied by a different ‘Cressida Bell for Heywood Hill’ bookmark.

Once you, or the gift recipient, activates a subscription, you are invited to fill out a reading consultation. You can choose to receive their choice of the best in new books, or a book selected based on your reading tastes outlined in your consultation.

I waited a few days after Christmas to fill out my consultation because it was that time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s where you aren’t really sure what day it is and it’s just a black hole of food, holiday movies, shopping and I wanted to be fresh. I was taking this VERY SERIOUSLY, y’all.

And by serious, I mean, that I think I rambled on about eating my body weight in chocolate covered pretzels while binge-watching Miranda? I don’t know. It was all a blur. But, the consultation was submitted and all I had to do was wait for my first book to arrive. Which happened last Tuesday.

Y’all, LOOK at this packaging. I felt like Helene Hanff opening her latest from Marks & Co. Sidenote: if you haven’t watched 84 Charing Cross Road, please quit reading this and go do that now. I’ll wait.

And my inaugural book?

The Binding by Bridget Collins. I legit squee’d out loud when I saw the cover. This has been on my list for over a year now and I couldn’t be happier with this pick. Sending my Book Chooser a million internet high-fives right now.

I can’t wait for next month!

Still not sure how I want to document the horrific events on Wednesday, because there was zero reading or watching other than the news, but I’m going to go back and fill it in at some point.

Top section is Life Stuff, middle is TV Show Tracking, and the bottom section is for Reading. I don’t know yet what to do with the very bottom. Any ideas?
.
Not sure I’ll keep it like this every week - I need to get the feel of this planner before committing to one type of system. 😃

New Year, New Bookish Goals! . One of my goals thi New Year, New Bookish Goals!

One of my goals this year is to put myself out there more, especially online. As an introvert with social anxiety, this is super hard for me most days. I mean, I do post regularly in places but it’s usually surface stuff or self-deprecating bits about my life. This year though, I want to try and share more of what I’m doing and creating on and offline.
.
That being said, I’m starting by sharing my 2021 Bookish Goals in my #alwaysfullybooked planner. Well, most of my goals. There’s still one that I’m not ready to share just yet - baby steps, y’all. 🤓😃

Do you set reading/bookish goals each year?
