Books, with a side of Life

FOMO: Week of 9/14/2020

In a new weekly series that I’m calling FOMO, because there are a ton of books to read and not enough time to read them all, I’m going to be listing a few books that are releasing this week that I for sure don’t want to miss. It might be one book or 20482, but I will try and keep it to just a handful. The list will cover more than just my usual cozies and romance wants- not that those two genres will be excluded, but it won’t be exclusive to those either.

Grown

Author: Tiffany D. Jackson
Genre: Mystery/Young Adult
Publisher:  Katherine Tegen Books
Publish Date: September 15, 2020
Format: Hardcover, 384 pages

Purchase

From Goodreads: Korey Fields is dead.

When Enchanted Jones wakes with blood on her hands and zero memory of the previous night, no one—the police and Korey’s fans included—has more questions than she does. All she really knows is that this isn’t how things are supposed to be. Korey was Enchanted’s ticket to stardom.

Before there was a dead body, Enchanted was an aspiring singer, struggling with her tight knit family’s recent move to the suburbs while trying to find her place as the lone Black girl in high school. But then legendary R&B artist Korey Fields spots her at an audition. And suddenly her dream of being a professional singer takes flight.

Enchanted is dazzled by Korey’s luxurious life but soon her dream turns into a nightmare. Behind Korey’s charm and star power hides a dark side, one that wants to control her every move, with rage and consequences. Except now he’s dead and the police are at the door. Who killed Korey Fields?

All signs point to Enchanted.

More Than A Woman

Author: Caitlin Moran
Genre: Nonfiction
Publisher:  Harper Perinnial
Publish Date: September 15, 2020
Format: Hardcover, 272 pages

Purchase

From Goodreads: A decade ago, Caitlin Moran burst onto the scene with her instant bestseller, How to Be a Woman, a hilarious and resonant take on feminism, the patriarchy, and all things womanhood. Moran’s seminal book followed her from her terrible 13th birthday through adolescence, the workplace, strip-clubs, love, and beyond—and is considered the inaugural work of the irreverent confessional feminist memoir genre that continues to occupy a major place in the cultural landscape.

Since that publication, it’s been a glorious ten years for young women: Barack Obama loves Fleabag, and Dior make “FEMINIST” t-shirts. However, middle-aged women still have some nagging, unanswered questions: Can feminists have Botox? Why isn’t there such a thing as “Mum Bod”? Why do hangovers suddenly hurt so much? Is the camel-toe the new erogenous zone? Why do all your clothes suddenly hate you? Has feminism gone too far? Will your To Do List ever end? And WHO’S LOOKING AFTER THE CHILDREN?

As timely as it is hysterically funny, this memoir/manifesto will have readers laughing out loud, blinking back tears, and redefining their views on feminism and the patriarchy. More Than a Woman is a brutally honest, scathingly funny, and absolutely necessary take on the life of the modern woman—and one that only Caitlin Moran can provide.

The Awkward Black Man

Author: Walter Mosley
Genre: Short Stories
Publisher:  Grove Press
Publish Date: September 15, 2020
Format: Hardcover, 336 pages

Purchase

From Grove Press: Bestselling author Walter Mosley has proven himself a master of narrative tension, both with his extraordinary fiction and gripping writing for television. The Awkward Black Mancollects seventeen of Mosley’s most accomplished short stories to showcase the full range of his remarkable talent.

Mosley presents distinct characters as they struggle to move through the world in each of these stories—heroes who are awkward, nerdy, self-defeating, self-involved, and, on the whole, odd. He overturns the stereotypes that corral black male characters and paints a subtle, powerful portrait of each of these unique individuals. In “The Good News Is,” a man’s insecurity about his weight gives way to a serious illness and the intense loneliness that accompanies it. Deeply vulnerable, he allows himself to be taken advantage of in return for a little human comfort in a raw display of true need. “Pet Fly,” previously published in the New Yorker, follows a man working as a mailroom clerk for a big company—a solitary job for which he is overqualified—and the unforeseen repercussions he endures when he attempts to forge a connection beyond the one he has with the fly buzzing around his apartment. And “Almost Alyce” chronicles failed loves, family loss, alcoholism, and a Zen approach to the art of begging that proves surprisingly effective.

Touching and contemplative, each of these unexpected stories offers the best of one of our most gifted writers.

New Year, New Bookish Goals! . One of my goals thi New Year, New Bookish Goals!
.
One of my goals this year is to put myself out there more, especially online. As an introvert with social anxiety, this is super hard for me most days. I mean, I do post regularly in places but it’s usually surface stuff or self-deprecating bits about my life. This year though, I want to try and share more of what I’m doing and creating on and offline.
.
That being said, I’m starting by sharing my 2021 Bookish Goals in my #alwaysfullybooked planner. Well, most of my goals. There’s still one that I’m not ready to share just yet - baby steps, y’all. 🤓😃
